The aim of the programme is to develop and improve skills in bioprocessing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe course provided me with a basic understanding of techniques used in process and product development \u2013 from implementing an idea, to formulating objectives and execution.\u00a0 It also assisted with educating me on the importance of equipment and systems that I work with and how it eases the process flow of the project,\u201d said Aphiwe Mahlangeni, a CSIR biotechnology intern.<\/p>\n<p>The two week long workshop from 18 \u2013 29 August 2014 covered a wide range of topics in bioprocessing. This included a theoretical component in bioprocess and product development as well as the control philosophy and troubleshooting of associated equipment. It also consisted of hands-on practical training including data handling and reporting which centred on producing a full production batch from cryopreserved culture to fermentation, down-stream processing and final product packaging.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_726\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/biomanufacturing.csir.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Bioprocessing-workshop-group-photo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-726\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-726\" src=\"http:\/\/biomanufacturing.csir.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Bioprocessing-workshop-group-photo1-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Bioprocess and Product Development Workshop attendees\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biomanufacturing.csir.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Bioprocessing-workshop-group-photo1-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/biomanufacturing.csir.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Bioprocessing-workshop-group-photo1-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-726\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bioprocess and Product Development Workshop attendees<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Among the attendees at the workshop were six staff members from the CSIR bioprocessing and product development group, 14 interns and in-service trainees, and three industry participants from Onderstepoort Biological Products and Deltamune.<\/p>\n<p>The BIDC Programme, funded through the Jobs Fund and the Department of Science and Technology, has the objective of growing the biomanufacturing industry through skills and infrastructure development.
